This award covers three main areas:

  1. to assist chartered, associate and student members travelling overseas to centres of excellence in countries with established physiotherapy practices on study visits/projects
  2. to support enhancement of physiotherapy through international education and development projects between the UK and World Physiotherapy member countries in low and middle income regions
  3. to assist pre-registration physiotherapy students undertaking an elective clinical placement or similar educational exchange.

The Education Awards Panel particularly welcomes applications from individuals from under-represented backgrounds.

1: Members travelling overseas

Members who go to centres of excellence/quality institutions in countries with well-established physiotherapy practices can apply for assistance with study visits/projects for educational or research purposes. The experience can then lead to development of physiotherapy practice on return to the UK. Indicative examples include:

  • evaluation of physiotherapeutic methods or skills
  • study of alternative methods of patient care
  • collaborative research with centres of excellence
  • development of specific skills/knowledge relevant to research in another institution
  • gaining teaching experience.

Please note:

  • the fund does not cover costs of overseas taught courses
  • applications should be submitted in advance of the project taking place as retrospective applications will not normally be considered
  • as a guide successful applicants could receive up to £3,500.

2: International education and development projects

This class of award supports the enhancement of physiotherapy through international education and development projects between the UK and World Physiotherapy member countries in low and middle income regions.

Through funding such projects, the society aims to support the education and learning policies of both World Physiotherapy and World Physiotherapy European Region. It also helps strengthen CSP international involvement and allows the society to support the work of bodies like the World Health Organisation.

The project must empower participating physiotherapy staff, whatever their country of origin, by recognising existing expertise and enhancing status, knowledge and skills.

Trustees envisage that one award will normally be allocated to chartered, associate or student member for an overseas project, and one award will normally be allocated to an overseas physiotherapist for a UK-based project.

The project must be financially viable, supported wholly by the contribution from the CSPCT's Education and Development Placements Award, or supported partly, with extra funding provided by other sources.

The award is intended to support substantial educational projects rather than supporting a smaller number of projects.

Please note:

  • the fund does not cover costs of overseas taught courses
  • applications should be submitted in advance of the project taking place as retrospective applications will not normally be considered
  • as a guide successful applicants could receive up to £3,500.

3: Elective clinical placement

This type of award assists pre-registration physiotherapy students undertaking an elective clinical placement or similar educational exchange. The fund is intended to assist students in financing such placements and is not intended to cover the total cost.

Awards are available for any clinical elective placement or similar recognised educational placement or exchange programme in the UK and overseas.

Please note:

  • only one award per student during the course of study
  • the awards are not available for anything unrelated to supervised clinical activities
  • you must be a subscribing student member of the CSP to be considered for an award
  • applications must be submitted in advance of the placement taking place as retrospective applications will not be considered
  • as a guide successful applicants could receive up to £2,000.
