The Scottish government has announced it would be making an interim pay award of one per cent for agenda for change staff, backdated to 1 December 2020.
A letter sent to all staff makes clear that a one per cent ‘payment on account’ will be topped up when negotiations are concluded on a final pay settlement. The payment on account will be capped at £800 for those earning more than £80,000.
However the letter also indicates this is unlikely to be concluded before the summer.
Following the announcement, Elaine Sparkes (CSP assistant director for employment relations and union services) said: ‘It is disappointing the Scottish government has made this unexpected announcement to impose an interim award rather than entering into the meaningful negotiations that the CSP and other health unions have been calling for. To wait until the summer when negotiations could begin now does not recognise the value and contribution of NHS staff.
'The CSP will continue to campaign for a significant pay rise in Scotland and across the UK, along with the other health unions. CSP members, along with all NHS staff, deserve a pay rise that recognises their crucial role in the pandemic, begins to restore the value of pay following the cuts of the last decade, and ensures the NHS is able to recruit the staff it needs for the future.'
