Private physiotherapy consultant Bhanu Ramaswamy believes she is the first physiotherapist to become an honorary fellow of Cardiff University – 30 years on from graduating.
The honour was presented at the health professionals’ graduation ceremony on 21 July.
‘Fellowships are given to alumni who have done something notable in their field. I think they chose a physiotherapist to show allied health professionals that they too can break new ground and be recognisable in their own right,’ said Dr Ramaswamy, who is internationally renowned for her work in older people’s rehabilitation and Parkinson’s.
For Dr Ramaswamy, the award completes a triumvirate of accolades; a CSP fellowship in 2014 for professional recognition, an OBE last year and now a pat on the back from Cardiff University for her career achievements.
‘Physiotherapy fellowships are becoming more common, so I think that is a sign of our growing recognition,’ she added.
