England Amputee Football team
The England Amputee Football Team has announced a new partnership with the CSP. The England team will compete in the biannual European Cup in Istanbul from 1-10 October 2017. Each player and member of the support squad needs to raise funds to participate. The CSP will be sponsoring the team’s Chartered Physiotherapist, Charles Wilton, for the forthcoming European Cup competition.
England will be in action for the first time in six years on 24 & 25 June in Poland for the Polska Amp Futbol Cup. For the last 11 years the England Amputee Football Association's (EAFA) has supported a Great Britain team. As the game has strengthened across Great Britain and Ireland, the decision has now been made to revert to an England Team to compete in Istanbul.
Commenting on the partnership the England Coach, Own Coyle Jr, said “We’re delighted to be working with the CSP and to have professional physio support. Chartered physio support is important for any elite sportsperson. It is all the more important for our team because of the particular stresses players put on their bodies.”
Rob Yeldham, CSP Director of Strategy, said “As the professional body for physiotherapists we understand the vital role physiotherapy plays in both amputee rehabilitation and in sport. So when we heard the England Amputate Football Team needed sponsorship to enable them to play in Istanbul, we decided the best way we could help was to sponsor a team physio.”
Amputee Football started in the USA in the 1980s. It is played by over 30 countries.
EAFA’s aim is to provide the opportunity to play football whether locally, nationally and internationally for amputees, people with congenital limb deficiencies and players with restricted limb use.
Amputee Football is growing. Eight league clubs currently compete in the National League representing; Birmingham, Derby, Devon, Exeter, Newcastle, Nottingham, London (Crystal Palace) and Scotland. EAFA are running development sessions with the aim of forming more teams. The Irish National League is organised by the Irish Amputee Football Association.
