Physio support workers in Wales will be given a chance to study for UK’s first support workers’ diploma launched on 1 October 2015. Its benefits include standardised training, skills development and accredited qualifications.
The new diploma aims to improve the quality of patient care provided by physiotherapy support workers
It was developed by the Welsh physiotherapy leaders’ advisory group and a steering group which included seven local health boards, Velindre NHS Trust, Cardiff University, associate members and patients’ representatives. The group was chaired by Hywel Dda University Health Board physiotherapy manager Sue Griffith.
The CSP supported the development of the diploma as part of its drive to improve recognition and continuing professional development for physio support staff. The society welcomed the launch as a landmark in better understanding of the contribution to healthcare made by a large section of its membership.
The diploma is part of a Welsh government skills and career development framework for healthcare support workers. It will be awarded by Agored Cymru.
A key aim of the new diploma is to improve the quality of care which physiotherapy support workers provide for patients.
