As our article on page 24 shows, soldiers returning from the battlefield received physical therapy from what were then known as masseuses.
How the profession has changed since: just last week the CSP held a conference in Belfast to welcome the move to independent prescribing for physios.
This is now accepted throughout the rest of the UK and due to become law in Northern Ireland very soon. (We await the decision from the Northern Ireland Executive.)
Those physical therapy pioneers 100 years ago were also campaigners - showing the benefits of their skills in appalling circumstances.
CSP members still hold on to that campaigning, innovative spirit as they fight today’s battle for quality care and services.
