Two major publications that will support registered physiotherapists to access high-quality preceptorship have been launched.
Both publications are intended to support allied health professionals (AHPs) in periods of career or workplace transition. This reflects growing recognition of the benefits preceptorship brings beyond the newly qualified period, to enable clinicians to grow in confidence and autonomy within their new context.
The HCPC’s Principles of preceptorship were developed following a period of stakeholder consultation and collaboration with professional bodies. These high-level principles, which are intended for implementation across the UK, describe good practice in five key elements:
- organisational culture
- quality and oversight
- preceptee empowerment
- preceptor role
- delivering preceptorship programmes.
NHS England’s AHP preceptorship standards and framework should be used in conjunction with the HCPC principles in England. This publication builds on these principles and provides guidance on how organisations can best deliver quality and sustainable AHP preceptorship programmes.
