New glossary of equity, diversity and belonging terminology

The CSP has published an updated glossary of words and phrases to help members’ understanding of equity, diversity and belonging.

Equity, diversity and belonging

The glossary is connected to the work in the CSP’s draft equity, diversity and belonging strategy, which is currently under consultation with members and staff.

We are also encouraging members to take part in a virtual discussion group to test if the language used in the strategy is accessible, easily understood and meaningful – please volunteer through the consultation survey or via our website.

The discussion groups will involve a 75-minute time commitment, out of core working hours, and cover your understanding of the language used in the strategy. For every member who takes part in a discussion group a £25 donation will be made to the CSP Member Benevolent Fund on your behalf.

Prof Karen Middleton, chief executive of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, said: 'We know that members and staff want to be allies with marginalised groups to improve social justice, inclusion and health inequalities.

'And language naturally develops over time, so the glossary aims to improve understanding and enable informed conversations with patients, clients and colleagues.

To make sure we get the foundations right for the work that lies ahead, we need all members to engage with our draft equity, diversity and belonging strategy, regardless of any protected characteristics or whether they are part of a marginalised group or not.

'This is a strategy for the whole profession and we hope all members will join us in our desire to be pro-diversity and anti-discrimination in all its forms.'

Members have until 31 July to complete a short, online survey, run by independent agency Enventure, on the draft strategy.

The glossary will be an evolving document and updated as needed. To suggest an addition, contact governance@csp.org.uk
