New stewards and safety reps can now continue to receive induction training during the lockdown and Covid-19 with the CSP's new distance learning induction courses.
Due to the pandemic all face-to-face CSP reps courses were unfortunately postponed but these distance learning induction courses will give new workplace reps the knowledge to be able to do their role.
The courses will explore the work and legal rights of reps, where to get support, involving members and dealing with workplace issues, among other things. The stewards course will also look at dealing with management and representing members. The safety reps course will explore the health and safety legislation, including risk assessments and inspections.
Louise Walker, head of training at the CSP, said:
'Although these are not face-to-face courses, stewards and safety reps are legally entitled to paid time off to do this training. Of course with Covid-19 many people will not want to take time away from the workplace. But having a trained steward and safety rep benefits the employer, and workplaces which have reps are much safer for all – vital at this time.'
Both courses will start on 2 June. The activities workbook will be emailed to stewards and safety reps, along with details of support and resources. There will also be a Zoom element to both of the courses.
The courses, which are accredited by the National Open College Network (NOCN), involve reps working individually through a workbook and completing a number of activities – followed by group Zoom meetings. Support is available throughout the course from the course tutors.
For further info or to register for either of the courses, workplace reps should email Sam Kyriacou samk@csp.org.uk . Deadline for registration is Thursday 28 May.
