Physio’s thanks for rowing highlight

I’m really pleased that  Frontline (2 January) featured my row across the Atlantic to raise money for Surfers Against Sewage. This national marine conservation charity campaigns to protect oceans and beaches.

A lot of my physiotherapy knowledge and skills have been used in coming up with preventive measures to help our four-woman team to stay as healthy as possible.

It’s a long voyage – 3,000 miles – and there is a lot of opportunity to develop niggles. So I hope to be able to provide professional advice about how to manage these, while still being able to help the team row round the clock for more than 40 days.

Glittering chandeliers do not equal excellent care

Please could you pass on to Pat O’Brien my thanks for writing such a brilliant article about technology and the care sector (Frontline 5 December, Views and Opinions). It moved me to tears.

I regularly visit patients in care homes and it seems that posh decor, glittering chandeliers and plush carpets are the ‘answer’, even if the patient is still not dressed or shaved by lunchtime. Where is the common sense and care?

Find out more about video training assessments

I’m a senior physiotherapist working for Horder Healthcare on the south coast of England, near Brighton.

As far as I’m aware, we are the first musculoskeletal department in Britain to set up video training for watched assessments.

GPs have been using this as an educational tool for more than years and I thought it was about time physiotherapists caught up with this.

We are all ready to go with implementing this in January and I would be happy to help with other physios who wanted to implement this in their department.

If you are interested in this initiative, please do contact me.

Valuing the CSP’s professional advice

I am happy with the support I received from the CSP’s Professional Advice Service during the last 12 months.

Your advisers guided me through a very difficult situation.

In addition, it was reassuring to know that I had the backing of my physiotherapy professional body.
