A new report has prompted fresh warnings about the workforce pressures Brexit will place on a range of professions, including physiotherapy.
The report was commissioned by the Cavendish Coalition, which includes the CSP, and shows there could be a 9% shortage of physiotherapists after the UK leaves the EU.
Rob Yeldham, CSP director of strategy, said:
‘This important report lays bare the damage that Brexit will do to the NHS and social care workforce unless the government takes firm action immediately.
‘We could be 4,000 physiotherapists short, with significant pressures also placed on other professions.
‘The government needs to act now to ensure EU nationals can remain, without incurring the unacceptable costs and bureaucracy that is currently being discussed.
‘It also needs to commit to delivering sufficient training places in each of the UK’s four countries to ensure the ongoing supply of physiotherapists meets what we know is the ongoing, and rising, demand.
‘Finally, the government needs to confirm that EU nationals who graduate from UK physiotherapy courses can stay and work in the country.’
