"Government to lift the public sector pay cap"

Claire Sullivan, director of employment relations and union services at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, said:

‘NHS staff have continued to deliver outstanding services during the toughest of times so it is good that the government appears ready at last to keep its half of the bargain.

‘We await the full detail but it is encouraging that the Prime Minister is responding to the pressure from unions, the NHS itself and the independent pay review body to end the inherently unfair and counterproductive policy of pay restraint.

‘While it will not erase the significant losses NHS staff have incurred over the last seven years, an increase in line with inflation will at least be a welcome acknowledgement the skill, expertise and sheer dedication they bring to patient care every day.

‘That increase will need to be fully funded so as not to take away money from already stretched budgets – and must also mark the start of a process to recover what NHS staff have lost over the past seven years.’
