A new scheme to help physiotherapists and other AHPs return to work is important but needs to be part of a wider drive to give the NHS the workforce it needs, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy said today.
Responding to the Government's announcement of an initiative to fund placements for 300 AHPs, Natalie Beswetherick, director of practice and development at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, said:
'Anything that removes some of the barriers that prevent physiotherapists returning to work is of course very welcome.
'The NHS is under enormous pressure so their skills and expertise are much-needed and can make an important contribution.
'However, this measure must be part of a wider drive to deliver the workforce the NHS needs.
'Our modelling shows an extra 500 physios are year are required just to keep track with demand, so there needs to be a focus on those seeking to start their career as well as on those looking to return.'
