Physio excellence recognised at NHS Borders’ awards

Five physios who work for NHS Borders were shortlisted for individual or team awards – with two winning and three being highly commended.

Katie Masterson, the health board’s physiotherapy team lead for mental health, received the person-centred care award. She said: ‘It was very special both to be nominated and to actually win the award. Person-centred care is what I and the other physio staff in the team try to deliver each day.

‘We work closely with patients, their carers and the wider health and social care team to try and understand each individual and harness their strengths to enable them.’

Her colleague, clinical psychologist Louise Keir, nominated her for the award, saying that she did so ‘because of the ongoing commitment she makes to providing excellent person-centered care to the patients within our ward and within mental health more widely.

‘She delivers very high quality physiotherapy care, liaising between departments to ensure that patients receive the best quality holistic care available to them, to the overall benefit to their physical and mental wellbeing.’

Also nominated in the same category was John Watt, a band 5 physiotherapist at Borders General Hospital near Melrose, who was highly commended.

One of his patients nominated him and provided the following feedback: ‘My treatment with John Watt is the best care I have received from the NHS in the UK and I am truly grateful for that.'

Meanwhile, Alison Clark and Claire Burgess, who are both band 7 physios in the board’s joint learning disabilities team, were nominated along with their colleagues in the partnership working category.

The primary care provider of the year was awarded to Coldstream Medical Practice, whose team includes band 6 MSK physiotherapist Laura Sheldrick.
