In a workplace win, the CSP has secured changes to the CSP PLI scheme to benefit members living in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) who work in Northern Ireland.
From today, HCPC registered physiotherapists with a residential address in the ROI who join the full-practising (B) category of CSP membership, will benefit from PLI cover for medical malpractice, subject to policy terms and conditions. The public liability policy has also been amended with effect from 1 July to provide public liability coverage in the same circumstances.
While CSP members who live in Northern Ireland may work in the ROI without restriction with PLI cover, until now, members living in the ROI could only join the overseas membership category without insurance, due to policy terms relating to ‘ordinary residence.’
This meant that a group of eligible HCPC registered physiotherapist faced a barrier to CSP membership, something that they raised through their local Northern Ireland team of CSP staff.
Jim Fahie, CSP associate director said: ‘The changes we have managed to agree to our PLI cover is good news for members as it provides cover to those that work in Northern Ireland but reside in the ROI.’
Millie Patrick, CSP membership manager said: ‘This is great news in terms of removing barriers to joining and we have a number of potential members living in the ROI already ready to join the CSP.’
David Nicholls, CSP organiser for Northern Ireland said: ‘Members who initially raised the anomaly impacting their ability to access PLI cover have warmly welcomed the news that a resolution has been found to this issue.
The solution will provide members with security and allow CSP to offer PLI to potential new members residing in ROI but working in the UK.
Pip White, CSP professional adviser said: ‘We will always work with our brokers to amend the policy in response to members’ insurance needs, where this is possible and of benefit to the scheme sustainability as a whole.
‘This change will benefit a very specific group of CSP members who live in the ROI and yet continue to work at premises with an address in NI treating patients who themselves have a residential address in NI.’
For clarity, members are reminded that there remains no PLI cover for members resident in the ROI who want to provide their services within the ROI, or elsewhere in the world, and in this case, these members will still need to secure additional insurance.
