Students aim for height of Everest for health promotion event

Physiotherapy students in the Midlands have taken part in a challenge to ‘climb’ as high as Mount Everest, using the stairs in their lecture hall.

Year 1 and 2 students took part in the WorkOut@Work event at the University of Nottingham on 15 November.

Ellie Bryan, a CSP student rep at the university, said: ‘We measured the height of the stairs in the main lecture theatre and in one day we attempted to climb the height of Everest, which is 29,029 feet.

‘The second year students climbed a combined height of 12,300 feet and the first years achieved 7,548 feet, so collectively we reached a height of 19,848 feet.’

The challenge is now being rolled out across five universities in the region  – Birmingham, Keele, Coventry, Leicester and Worcester – as part of a competition ‘to see who can reach the summit first’, said Ms Bryan.

Other W@W activities held at the university on the same day included a one-legged balance competition, campus walks and tai chi and yoga sessions.

As a result of the event, BBC Radio Nottingham has invited some of the CSP student reps who organised it to speak about the day.
