Take the chance to comment on NICE quality standard for hip fracture, says CSP

Physiotherapists should help patients to start moving the day after having surgery for a hip fracture, says the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

NICE predicts that the annual number of hip fractures in the UK will rise to 100,000 by 2020

The draft quality standard for adults says patients should be offered mobilisation every day they are in hospital and after discharge.

A consultation on the document runs until early May. The CSP’s response will be informed by members’ views.

CSP professional adviser Carley King said: ‘Physiotherapy is a key component in a person’s recovery from hip fracture. It’s important that the physiotherapy voice is heard in this NICE consultation.’

Benefits of early mobilisation

NICE says there are more than 70,000 hip fractures each year, costing NHS and social care services in the UK about £2 billion. Most of this is due to inpatient stays, which NICE says can be cut with early mobilisation.
