Mums matter

I am a physiotherapist and had my second child last October. I am passionate about women’s health and empowering and educating pregnant and post-natal ladies. Since having my child, I was shocked and appalled not to be offered a six-week GP check-up unless I had specific medical needs or problems.

I contacted Milli Hill, the positive birth author, who advised me to start a campaign about my concerns. I started #mumsmatter on social media and wrote a petition asking for all ladies to receive a check-up with women’s health physios post-natally.

Within four days this petition had more than 2,000 signatures and is well on its way to being discussed in government and, hopefully, parliament.

I am hoping to get women’s health physios well and truly on the map with what we offer and how women are not getting the care they deserve or need.

If you would like to read my petition, here is the link.

No ‘snowflakes’ here!

I would like to acknowledge the incredible lengths that members of the outpatient physiotherapy teams went to keep services running as snow fell across Derbyshire.

One of our physiotherapists woke early to hike six miles up hill and down dale, through deep snow, to ensure that he was available for his patients. Another cycled a similar distance while others walked and ran miles through the snow to ensure that services continued to run despite the weather. Our team of physios, assistants and admin staff worked flexibly and innovatively across the service to ensure that patients continued to receive the treatment and support that they needed.

Thanks to everyone for great teamwork and commitment to keep services available for the people that needed us. (See here for more reports of responses to the snow).

I would like to point out that members of the CSP can apply for next year’s fellowships from 27 April. This can be done online here

There is a nursing and allied health professionals category which you can view online here.  It’s a joint project with the Burdett Trust for Nursing, the Royal College of Nursing and the Foundation of Nursing Studies Centre for Nursing Innovation.
