It’s going to be a sporting summer – and for most of our members that’s got to be good news.
Rio 2016 opens with a ceremony on 5 August and the Olympics will be swiftly followed by the Paralympic Games, which end on 18 September.
Read all about the work CSP members have put into training athletes for the Rio – a feature on page 24 and a news story on page 8.
For many physios, it was the prospect of working in sport that drew them to this profession. So the profile of Dave Rennie, head physio at Premier League reigning champions Leicester City, will no doubt catch the eye (page 30). With players, staff and fans itching for the first match of the Premier League season to kick off, we look at Dave’s role in the Foxes unexpected triumph in May.
But not everyone gets to work in such high-profile roles. And many physios find themselves in a different field from the one they started in. An example is the career of learning disability specialist Marie Groves, featured in the Three Minutes slot (page 66). A support worker, Marie worked patiently for seven years until a suitable post came up in learning disabilities. Marie was inspired to work in the field after growing up with a sister with a learning disability.
Talking of fulfilling goals, we also report on the CSP members who fought successfully to receive holiday pay while on maternity leave (page 8). The CSP may be a small union, but to have this embedded in the NHS staff handbook marks a significant contribution to the rights of everyone working in the NHS.
