I’ve suffered a bereavement – what are my rights at work?

Unfortunately there is no legal right to paid time off for bereavement leave. However, all workers have a statutory right to a reasonable amount of unpaid time off work to care for dependants and this may be relevant in a bereavement situation. It is best practice for employers to have an up to date compassionate leave policy outlining the relevant circumstances that the policy applies to, the amount of leave that will be granted and whether or not this is paid. If you experience problems getting time off speak to your CSP workplace steward. If you do not have a steward you can call the CSP enquiry handling unit on 020 7306 6666.
